What are runes?
Runes are new to Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, and they fit right in with the open world of Vikings. These stones can be placed on your weapons and armor as polishing items. They come in a wide variety of colors and specialties, making them one of the best ways to customize Viking Warrior Eivor to their liking.
While most runes only provide slight bonuses, such as +1,0 fire resistance or +14,9 hit points, it is their cumulative effect that aims to turn Eivor into a stronger, more powerful hero. faster and more robust. How to upgrade weapons and armor
After Eivor and the Raven Clan arrive in England and settle Ravensthorpe, your first task will be to build Gunnar's Forge Shop. Once built, you will be able to visit Gunnar and request his services.
Gunnar is able to improve the quality of gear such as weapons and armor, allowing you to upgrade these items with additional rune slots and fortify them with materials found across the vast world.
Equipment qualities
There are currently four grades of gear:
- Fine (gray) – No Rune slots, two upgrade slots
- Superior (red) – One Rune slot, four upgrade slots
- Flawless (blue) – Two rune slots, seven upgrade slots
- Mythic (Gold) – Three rune slots, 10 upgrade slots
Upgrade Materials
Upgrades are done using materials such as Leather, Iron Ore, Cloth, and Titanium.
- Leather is often found by hunting and gathering it from animal hides.
- Iron ore is found by breaking obsidian rocks in nature.
- Cloth and Titanium are both fairly rare, but can best be located using Raven's-Eye by pressing down on the D-Pad and scanning an area using your bird companion.
If you have enough to upgrade an item, you'll see an up arrow on its icon in your inventory menu.
Applying runes and upgrades can be done at any time in the game, but to improve the quality of a piece of equipment you will need to bring the right supplies to Gunnar, the blacksmith of Ravensthorpe. Each upgrade requires its own resource, often found in chests or rewarded in-game.
- The Carbon Ingot upgrades an item from Fine to Superior.

Opal is a rarer currency that can be spent at Thousand Eyes stores. These orphan traders offer timed contracts in exchange for Opal. On your turn, you can use Opal to buy yourself some of the rarest items in the game.
Remember to prioritize these contracts if you accept any, as they tend to only last a few days or even hours.
Supplies and raw materials
Supplies and raw materials are the two vital resources you will need to upgrade your settlement, Ravensthorpe, and unlock new game activities such as fishing, hunting Templars, or hosting parties for your clan.
Commission
Supplies can be found in virtually every village or settlement, so you'll want to scour the houses and buildings inside for more supplies. Most colony upgrades require several hundred supplies and you'll tend to find them in quantities of a few hundred at a time.
Commodities
Raw materials, much the same, are needed in large quantities, and they are only found by performing raids on your map. With each successful Raid, you will be one step closer to the next home upgrade.
