Rare monsters in Bravely Default 2 offer some of the toughest combat challenges in the game outside of job level 15 challenges. They are entirely optional and require some preparation to ensure victory, but challenging rare monsters in Bravely Default 2 is well worth your time.
If you're looking for rare monsters as you progress through the story, you probably won't be able to handle the fights the first time around. These are incredibly tough bosses that can deal 1k+ damage in a single hit if you're unprepared, so there's no harm in waiting until you're better geared and level up.
In addition to the challenge, rare monsters in Bravely Default 2 have a chance to drop rare gear, including weapons and armor. It's only a small chance, but luckily you can farm rare mobs as many times as you want.
Bravely Default 2 Coral Emperor Location and Drops
- Location โ Island south of Halcyonia
- Rare drop โ Ice Brand (sword)
Coral Emperor is probably the first rare monster you'll encounter because it's so close to the beach where your first quests take place. It absorbs magic attacks of all kinds, so use physical lightning-based attacks or lightning-infused weapons if you want to exploit this weakness.
Otherwise, just whittle down his health with your strongest physical characters and bolster your magic defenses with a Bard.
- Weaknesses - Lightning, Daggers, Swords
- Absorbs - All Magic
- Half Damage โ Earth
Bravely Default 2 Leannan Sith Location and Drops
- Location โ Northern Halcyonia, west of the flower field
- Rare Drop โ Left Hand (dagger)
Leannan Sith is a slight exception to the rare monster rule, as it's weak enough to attack before you even leave Halcyonia. Leannan Sith's weaknesses are easy to exploit, and her one notable feature is inflicting charm.
- Weaknesses โ Lightning, Daggers, Bows
- Resistances โ Dark
- Half Damage โ Earth
- Absorbs โ Wind
Bravely Default 2 Treant Location and Drops
- Location โ Northeast Halcyonia
- Rare drop โ Rhongomiant (lance)
Treant blends into its surroundings a bit more, so keep an eye out for off-shadow green. He has many common weaknesses and no resistance to fear. The biggest challenge is simply staying alive, but regular Defense and Magic Defense buffs should make this a fairly straightforward fight.
- Weaknesses โ Dark, Lightning, Axes
- Resistors โ None
- Half damage โ none
- Absorbs โ Earth, Water, Light
Bravely Default 2 Nightmare Location and Drops
- Location โ South of Savalon
- Rare drop โ Dark robe (armor)
Nightmare was a big deal in the demo but shouldn't be a problem now. Healing magic deals damage to him, because Nightmare is an undead monster, so just avoid Fire and Dark, and you'll be done in no time.
- Weaknesses โ Light, Water, Lightning, Bows, Swords
- Resistors โ None
- Half Damage - Fire
- Absorb โ Dark
Bravely 2 default Mushussu location and drops
- Location - Island outside the Savalon Tunnels
- Rare Drop โ Defender (Sword)
The map doesn't help much to show the location of Mushussu. Head to the Savalon Tunnels and at the first save point, continue north. You will emerge from the tunnels of the small island of Mushussu. Note that you don't need to trigger Mushussu's side quest to start the battle, but be prepared for several water-based enemies to join the fight.
- Weaknesses โ Earth, Water, Spears, Swords
- Resistors โ None
- Half Damage - Wind, Fire
- Absorbs โ None
Bravely Default 2 Skull Cap Location and Drops
- Location โ East of Wiswald
- Rare drop โ Spiked Helm (helmet, unsurprisingly)
This rare monster from Bravely Default 2 is hiding in the woods east of Wiswald. It's hard to spot, so watch how you go if you're exploring the woods unprepared for combat. Once you engage Skullcap, it's standard plant-based combat. Pound him up with fire spells and abilities, and save your buffs as Skullcap will summon reinforcements.
- Weaknesses โ Fire, Daggers, Axes
- Resistances โ Lightning
- Half Damage โ None
- Absorbs โ Light, Water, Earth
Bravely Default 2 Orc King Location and Drops
- Location โ West of Wiswald
- Rare drop โ Genji Helm (helmet again)
There isn't much to say about the Orc King. He's another orc, and he wears a crown.
- Weaknesses โ Fire, Spears, Bows
- Resistors โ None
- Half Damage โ Earth, Water, Staff, Daggers
- Absorbs โ None
Baal Bravely Default 2 location and drops
- Location โ North of Wiswald
- Rare drop โ Carnwenhan (dagger)
Baal might steal your weapons if you attack him directly, so don't do that. Strong monks who don't wield weapons are a good idea, as are strong magic users. Just make sure you're ready for a long fight because Baal has an unpleasant amount of HP.
- Weaknesses โ Water, Light, Swords
- Resistances โ Dark
- Half Damage โ Earth
- Absorbs โ None
Bravely Default 2 Location and Baba Yaga Drops
- Location โ Northwest of Rimedhal
- Rare drop โ Sage's Staff (two guess what it is)
Baba Yaga is essentially Leannan Sith 2.0. Charm is his only big surprise, and one or two rangers could quickly do Baba Yaga's job. It's one of the few monsters in Bravely Default 2, but fair.
- Weaknesses - Wind, Daggers, Bows
- Resistors โ None
- Half Damage โ Earth, Dark, Staves
- Absorbs โ Lightning
Bravely Default 2 Jormungandr Location and Drops
- Location โ Rimedhal Cemetery
- Rare drop โ Monstrous Medley (Monster Lure)
Jormungandr is hiding in the sandbox at Rimedhal Cemetery, which is pretty hard to miss. Attack the sand to start the fight. The Jormungandr fight is notable mainly because the worm only has one weakness. Hit hard and you'll win the day.
- Weakness โ Axes
- Resistances โ Water, Dark
- Half Damage โ None
- Absorb โ Earth
Bravely Default 2 Astaroth location and drops
- Location โ Easternmost part of Rimedhal
- Rare drop โ Tristan's Bow (It's a bow)
Astaroth is where things start to get even tougher. Like most bosses at this stage of the game, he can counter most of your actions and deal powerful blows to your party. Luckily, he has plenty of weaknesses to exploit. Just have the buffs handy.
- Weaknesses โ Lightning, Light, Spears, Daggers
- Resistances โ Water
- Half Damage - Wind
- Absorb โ Dark
Bravely Default 2 Cyclops Location and Drops
- Location โ South of Holograd
- Rare drop โ Sensei's Belt (accessory)
Don't expect combat to get any easier from now on. Cyclops has no special gadgets, but he is much more powerful than the few monsters so far. As always, have a proficient healer and buff giver handy, and hone Cyclops' weaknesses.
- Weaknesses โ Lightning, Light, Axes
- Resistors โ None
- Half Damage - Fire, Earth, Dark
- Absorbs โ None
Bravely Default 2 Location and Susanoo Drops
- Location โ West of Holograd. It's on fire, and it's kinda hard to miss.
- Rare drop โ Mal Meadworth (sword)
In true Bravely fashion, Susanoo is a massive pain to deal with. His weaknesses are rare and uncommon, and he can deal massive amounts of damage. Dig your heels in and strengthen your fire defenses. Consider taking out the next boss first, as it drops some fantastic new staff.
- Weaknesses โ Light, Staffs
- Resistances โ Dark
- Half Damage - Water, Wind, Swords
- Absorbs โ None
Bravely Default 2 Zeus Location and Drops
- Location โ North of Holograd
- Rare drop โ Asclepius (staff)
Zeus is like Susanoo, made only of lightning and with easier weaknesses. Boost your lightning defenses and go all out with your strongest swords and spears alongside the usual buff-and-heal strategy.
- Weaknesses - Dark, Swords, Spears
- Resistors โ None
- Half Damage โ None
- Absorbs โ Lightning, Light
