We previously reported a rumor that Horizon Forbidden West, Guerrilla Games' sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn, may be delayed. It is now confirmed. The developer broke the news during Gamescom, saying the game will now be released on February 18, 2022.
Horizon Forbidden West was supposed to be released this fall, although there was never a firm release date for this 2021 window provided by Guerrilla or Sony. We now know when it will be released and that pre-orders for PS4 and PS5 will go live on September 2.
In a video from Gamescom, seen below, game director Mathijs De Jonge said the team wanted to polish the game as best they could before releasing it.
He went on to say, “It's no surprise that our teams have been hugely impacted by the global pandemic. We have adapted to new workflows and all challenges while keeping our team safe and prioritizing healthy work and life balance. But today we can finally confirm that our long-awaited sequel will be coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on February 18, 2022.”
Horizon Forbidden West was announced in 2020 during Sony's Future of Gaming presentation, which also revealed other notable games like Demon's Souls and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.
Guerrilla Games has also released a new patch for those looking to jump into Horizon Zero Dawn on PS5 and get the best performance possible. Patch 1.53 brings HZD up to 60fps on PlayStation 5. According to the patch notes, it "unlocks framerate at 60...in backward compatibility mode...fixed streaming performance issue...in backward compatibility mode , [and] removed Graphics Mode option from visual settings... in backward compatibility mode. »
