DayZ is a survival sim that is no easy task. If you fail to set up camp in time, you can succumb to a whole host of things, primarily zombie attacks! But also cold, disease and hunger, which is why building fires is an extremely important part of the gameplay.
To build a fire, you will need a few things to get started:
- The sticks
- Knife, ax or machete
- Tinder (bark, bandage, rags, paper or scraps)
- Firewood
To get the sticks for your fire, you will need to look for bushes and start cutting them down. You will need at least four short sticks to make a fire that you can use. You can use the blade of your choice to help you.
Place the sticks in your inventory and combine them with the tinder, then you can place your fireplace kit on the ground where you need to light it.
In your inventory, you will then want to equip your matchbox. Crouch and approach the fireplace kit to receive a prompt to light the fire by holding the command. You can now start your fire. To keep it lit, you'll want to head to nearby trees and cut them down to collect firewood to fuel the fire.

How can I do it without matches?
If you don't have matches, there is another way to light the fire.
Follow the same steps as above until you get to the point where you need to craft the fireplace kit. Then, for the next part, you will need:
- A knife
- Tree bark
- four sticks
- A cloth
Approach a dark tree and click on the command to collect tree bark. Once you have enough of it, you will see it appear in front of the tree and you can then place it in your inventory.
Next, open your inventory and combine a staff with a rag and equip the item you just crafted. Aim the camera at the place where you want to install your chimney and click on the command to build it.
Finally, go back to your inventory and combine tree bark with a stick to craft a hand drill kit. Once you've made and equipped it, you'll see the command prompt to start a fire with it.
