Hearts are a currency in Mortal Kombat 11 used to open special chests in the Krypt. Shao Kahn chests in the Krypt must first be smashed with Shao Kahn's hammer, then can be opened using 250 hearts. Fire chests must be opened by putting out a fire using Scorpion's chain lance near one of the fire chests, then can be opened using 100 hearts.
Shao Kahn's Hammer can be found on the altar directly in front of the area you spawn in, and players can find the Scorpion Chain Spear behind the throne room in Goro's Lair. Once you have these items, special chests can be opened using hearts.

How to win hearts
Performing Fatalities rewards three hearts and performing Brutalities rewards five. Another way to earn hearts is by completing towers, doing AI battles, and using Scorpion's spear to reach bodies in the Krypt. After finding Scorpion's Spear, you can use Triangle (PlayStation) or Y (Xbox) when near hanging bodies to shoot them down for one or two hearts.

There are other ways to earn hearts, like completing daily challenges or finding them in chests, but completing finishing moves and completing turns is the easiest way to earn them.
Shao Kahn and Fire chests contain rare items, usually including a skin and items for a specific character. These chests can also contain powerful upgrades or rare items like backgrounds, icons, or tower consumables.
