The Elytron is a very rare item in Minecraft that allows the player to fly through the air. Yes, you can actually fly! But the elytron is not a craftable item and will see the player reach the end, defeat the ender dragon, and scale the city of the end. It's not an easy task, however, this guide will walk you through the process. At the end, you will even know how to use the Elytra when you return from your trip!
What you will absolutely need for this journey is proper gear to defeat the ender dragon. These weapons, armor, and food should also be enough to get you through the end biome and up the city of Ender. Also, I recommend a lot of cobblestones, because you'll have to build your own paths, stairs, and bridges in particular places. Otherwise, bring a pickaxe so you can mine the endstone to build your paths. Also, I recommend lots of torches, or whatever you typically use to get back to the ender dragon's location. It's better to know where you started than to get lost along the way.
How to get Elytra
To get the Elytra you will need to find the portal of the end as you will be traveling to the end. So, with plenty of Eyes of Ender equipped, start by hunting down the Portal of the End Fortress. Once in The End, you must defeat the Ender Dragon. This will ensure a safe (and unique) passage home.
But it also evokes a second teleporter. This second teleporter is what you should focus on after defeating the ender dragon. See the image above.
Build a safe path to the second teleporter. This will come in handy when you return. Using an Ender Pearl (collected from an Enderman), launch the pearl into the middle of the second teleporter. This will teleport you to a larger End biome for you to explore.
Once in the larger Biome End, you will be looking for an End City. Essentially, it looks like a tall tower with a floating ship. See the image above. The floating ship is your end goal, as this is where the Elytra resides.
When searching for the city of the end, have weapons and torches handy. Because it's randomly generated, so it's impossible to know where or when you might find it. So be prepared to fight your way through Endermen. Light torches as you explore, as you need to backtrack to the second teleporter to return home later.
Once you get to End City, you have two options, both of which are potentially dangerous. Your objective is to reach the floating ship at the very top.
When you reach the top you still have to fight your way to the floating ship as it is not connected to the final town. Instead, it floats! So, very carefully, build yourself a bridge using End Stone, Cobblestone, or whatever you have taken. Hold Shift while you build, so you're locked onto the block and prevent yourself from falling to your death.
In the floating boat, you will see the Elytra hanging on the wall between two chests. He is also behind a Shulker. Take out the Shulker and grab your prized possession!
Once you have obtained the Elytra, begin your trek to the second teleporter. Hope you made a path with torches so you can get home quickly. Using another Ender Pearl, throw it at the teleporter to return to where you defeated the Ender Dragon. Assuming you created this safe path earlier, follow it to the middle teleporter and return home safely.
You now have the Elytra!
How to use Elytra
To use the Elytra, find a high – and I mean high – cliff that you can jump off of. A high altitude is required for the Elytra to have enough time to activate. To activate the Elytra, jump off the cliff. Then press the jump button again. This will activate the Elytra and you will slide!
However, the Elytra alone will only allow you to hover for a short time. If you want to stay in the air and fly longer, equip a firework in your right hand. As you approach landing, set off the fireworks, which will launch you higher into the air!
