Book and Quill is a fun item that lets you create a book that you can write and save to leave for your friends or just to disconnect from certain things. Creating them is a bit more difficult than a regular book, but without a step-by-step tutorial, we'll show you exactly how to create a book and a quill in Minecraft!
How to make a book and a quill
To create a book and a feather in Minecraft, we will need paper and leather to create the book. After that, we're going to have to locate an ink bag and a nib to make this into the final product. All of these require us to find specific plants or animals, so let's explore the map!
Step 1: find the paper ingredients
The paper is a little tricky to make because we're going to need sugarcane. It spawns near water, so you might have to go looking for it a bit. Here is an example of what it looks like:
When you find some, be sure to knock it down because it will completely break and you can collect it faster. I recommend planting some of this near water at your base, as it grows relatively quickly and you will always have a supply of it available!
Step 2: Create Paper
Once you have candy cane, you can make pieces of paper. You will need three canes for each piece of paper. We will need three pieces of paper for each book, so three candy canes will be enough for a single book! Here is the paper recipe:
You can also find Paper in Chests, which can be found in Shipwrecks, Strongholds, and Villages. Obviously, this won't be a steady supply, so it's always best to create an area to plant the candy cane!
Step 3: find leather
Leather isn't too hard to find, but you'll need to locate certain animals to get it. What you need to find are cows, mooshrooms, horses, donkeys, mules, llamas or hoglines. When you kill one, you have a chance to get 0-2 leather per animal. Alternatively, if you find yourself rabbits, you can turn four rabbit hides into one leather.
If you can find cows, I recommend starting a farm by fencing and raising them. You can then kill some for the leather you need. If you have a weapon enchanted with plunder, the amount of leather increases with each level! We need a piece of leather for each book we are going to create.
Step 4: Create the book
Now that we have paper and leather, we can put them together! Since there are only four ingredients, you can do this in your inventory or a crafting table. Here are the recipes to create a book:
Step 5: Find Chickens or Parrots for Feathers
Now we need to get a feather, which can be obtained by killing chickens or parrots. Chickens will generally be the easiest to find as they spawn randomly on grassy biomes. I would recommend harvesting seeds from breaking grass or harvesting wheat crops. You can use them to make the chickens follow you! Bring them back to your base and create a fenced area for them so you can spawn them. This way you can have as many feathers as you want!
Parrots can only be found in Jungle biomes, but they are a fairly rare spawn. They come in a variety of colors and can be tamed by feeding them seeds. Unfortunately, you cannot currently raise parrots, which makes chickens the best option for breeding.
You can also find feathers in shipwreck and village chests. So if you only want to make a few books and quills, you won't need to hunt down animals.
Step 6: Find Squid for an Ink Bag
Squids spawn in small groups in aquatic biomes like river, ocean, and their variants. They are quite common, and you should find them if you follow the various rivers in your seed, or if you paddle/swim around the ocean for a bit. When you kill one, they have a chance to drop 1-3 ink bags. We need at least one, but if you want to create more, you should get as many as you need!
Step 6: Create the Book and Quill
We finally gathered all the parts needed to make our book and quill! Now simply place the book, quill, and ink bag and place them in a crafting area in your inventory or a crafting table.

Use of book and quill
The book and the quill is an interesting element because you can write it in the form of a diary or even take notes. You can also write something in it, sign the book and it will be turned into a written book. Once this happens, the book can no longer be edited. So, if you want to leave information for another player, then using this method is a good method. It's also a great way to add lore to your story or roleplay!
