Figuring out the rarest biomes in Minecraft is tricky business. You have to consider what should be considered a real biome, and what is just an extension of a biome that already exists. To simplify this, we have provided a short list of the rarest biomes from two different categories: Normal Biomes and Altered Biomes. To find out the three rarest of each type, read below!
The rarest Minecraft biomes
Before we get started, we'd like to thank Reddit user u/Ecl1psed for their in-depth exploration of the data. All the information listed below is thanks to him running almost 37 million tests on the world generation. Seems like a pretty accurate way to get the numbers! In order of most common to least common in their respective categories, here are the rarest Minecraft biomes.
Badlands érodés

Eroded Badlands are the most common on the list but the most interesting to see. Tall colorful arrows protrude from the ground. This biome is a good source of warm-colored blocks if you're a designer in Survival mode. The most interesting part about Eroded Badlands is the fact that they are the only biome on this list that spawns above mine shafts.
Shores of mushroom fields

Next on the list is the Shores Mushroom Field. This biome looks, smells and sounds like any normal mushroom field. The only real difference, and what makes this biome rarer, is that to add the shoreline to the name, it must naturally generate with a river running through it. Seeing a river generate along an ocean is not common, and seeing it happen in the already rare mushroom field is quite unlikely.
Taiga Snowy Mountains

Snowcapped Taiga Mountains are the rarest on the list of unmodified biomes, though that fact is up for debate. When using a biome finder like Chunkbase, you can see this sprout quite often on any seed. These biomes are often confused with the Snowy Taiga Hills, but if you look closely, you'll see that the Snowy Taiga Mountains reach greater heights. They are even generally larger than most other mountain biomes!

Modified Wooded Badlands Plateau

Moving on to the altered biomes, you'll find that the most common is the altered woodland badlands plateau. This biome is the only significant source of wood in the badlands biomes. Another interesting fact is that these biomes usually spawn next to the Weathered Badlands biomes, which appeared earlier on this list!
Modified Badlands Plateau

Curiously, the Altered Badlands plateau is rarer than its forested counterpart. Considering Badlands biomes are notorious for being poor in wood sources, this certainly baffles the mind. This biome also frequently spawns next to Eroded Badlands! Despite its many similarities to the normal Badlands tabletops, the modified version generally has a lower elevation.
Edge of the Jungle Modified

The modified Jungle Edge biome is almost indistinguishable from any normal Jungle Edge. The easiest way to tell them apart is that the modified edge usually has more widespread trees and usually covers a much smaller area. Due to the requirement for extremely rare world spawn conditions, u/Ecl1pse's test showed that this extremely rare biome only has a 370 in 000 chance of spawning on any given piece of world. This is less likely than some of the highest scratch lottery ticket wins.
A rare lesson
It would be foolish to search every biome on this list without the proper tools. If you encounter them when you first populate your Minecraft world, maybe that day could be your best day to hit the casino.
