One of the new items that arrived in the Minecraft Caves and Cliffs Part 1 update is the Lighting Stick, but what exactly is it for? Well, for starters, its main purpose is to deflect lighting from objects. For example, if you place the rod on a wooden house, this in turn will prevent the house from being set on fire. Pretty cool, isn't it?
Well, it doesn't stop there, you can also use the Lightning Rod in some Redstone creations, albeit in a limited way. Indeed, to use the lightning rod to power something like a redstone lamp, the lighting will have to hit it.

It can also only be natural light, as no other light source will power the light rod. That being said, if you want to get Light Rods, you'll need to craft them with three copper ingots inside a crafting table.
However, if you don't know or have copper yet, you can get it by mining it underground and smelting it in a furnace. After that, you can then craft a lighting stick by placing the copper in the middle row all the way down the table.
