Since its release over three years ago, Warhammer: Vermintide 2 has received a steady stream of additions. Many of these were cosmetic hats, as looking dapper while rat-smashing is just as important as the rat-smashing itself. But some of those DLCs come in the form of three expansions: Shadows Over Bogenhafen, Back to Ubersreik, and Winds of Magic.
The latest add-on, which will be updated for free on PC on April 20, turns Vermintide 2 into a roguelike. Chaos Wastes is a new mode that lets players “go back to basics,” according to developer Fatshark. Equipment acquired in the base game does not translate to Chaos Wastes. Instead, as players undertake expeditions in this game mode and make their way to The Citadel of Eternity, they pick up new gear and loot specific to their run.
Game designer Markus Olsen said:
Chaos Wastes is meant to be a completely different experience than our regular missions and the Weaves. It's a journey through which you discover perks of varying potency to fight the curses of the Chaos Gods and better against the Wastes. The core of the game will of course remain the same, but your character's strength will increase dramatically as you journey.
Chaos Wastes includes 15 new locations to adventure and fight your way through. Here, players can undertake expeditions of varying difficulty that “end in a very difficult level,” according to Olsen.
Although new weapons are available for characters in Chaos Wastes, they will not be free. "...New weapons and cosmetics will be available for purchase," Olsen said. While it's likely that these will be released alongside the add-on update (since they're in mode), it's unclear if they'll be available as separate content packs. .
Just like the base game, Chaos Wastes can be played solo or with three other players in co-op.
