Bugha pocketed the $3 million prize, while runner-up Psalm got $1,8 million and third-place finisher Epikwhale got $1,2 million. The first 10 places were all rewarded, the other 7 places were undoubtedly consoled. The 10th place reward was $225, which is enough to drown your sorrows…
The competition was watched by 2 million people and took place at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. The final day was all about the Fortnite Finals and the total prize pool was $30 million! In addition to the solo, there was also a Duos tournament, won by David “Aqua” W. and Emil “Nyhrox” Bergquist Pedersen, which also took home a $3 million prize, split between the two of course. They emerged victorious over 50 other teams, with two wins out of six contested and amassing the most points.
Giersdorf “Bugha” is a member of the Sentinels group. According to reports, he dominated the entire race from the start and collected a total of 59 points which earned him his trophy. For comparison, “Psalm”, the singles runner-up, got 33 points from six matches. The system used to determine the winner was based on scoring points throughout the competition, encouraging players not only to place higher in individual matches, but also to amass the most points. This discouraged players from hiding the entire match and kept things moving.
“Words can't even explain how I feel now! I am so happy. All I did, that's all, it paid off. It's just crazy! said Giersdorf after lifting the trophy. The total prize pool of $30 million and the top prize of $3 million make this Fortnite World Cup championship one of the most important and prestigious competitions in the world, and it undoubtedly raises the bar for the entire esports community.
