GreedFall has an interesting weapon and armor upgrade system that directly adapts to how you choose to build your character. Appropriate upgrades can give you access to specific skills, as well as general stat increases and buffs. These miscellaneous mechanics allow you to temporarily don certain pieces of armor to perform specific tasks, adding a fun touch of depth to the game.
GreedFall - How to Upgrade Weapons and Armor
To improve your weapons and armor, you must have access to the artisan talent. You do not have to specify these talents if you have an item or armor that grants you this skill. You will need to equip these parts when you want to upgrade. However, if you don't, then you must use the corresponding point in the Character Development tab.
Next, you must have access to a trader who can craft. You can talk to a blacksmith in most major cities, access the workbench at any of your residences, or visit any of the camps you have set up around the world.
From there, select the weapon or armor you want to upgrade. Not all armor and weapons can be upgraded. Those that can be upgraded have up to three upgrade slots, which you can view on your main inventory screen in the "Crafting" column next to the weapon's name.
Each slot allows you to upgrade a specific aspect of the weapon. The changes come with status changes and a cosmetic change. Some upgrades will require a certain level of crafting, and all upgrades use resources available in the world. It's a good idea to check all available options before committing. Some of them give you a talent boost and might unlock a talent you don't have access to yet.
All weapons and armor also have individual skill, stat, and attribute requirements in order to use them. Make sure you don't upgrade something you can't equip.
