Axolotls are adorable amphibious creatures added to Minecraft in the Caves and Cliffs update. Like many other Minecraft creatures, Axolotls appear with different color variations. There are currently five different colors of Axolotl in the game, and three removed or unreleased. Finding every Axolotl color variation can be tricky, but is possible with a bit of luck and can be speeded up by breeding Axolotl.
Color variations
Common
There are 4 common Axolotl color variations, which represent a 99,2% chance of respawning. Each color has approximately a 24,9% chance of appearing.
- Leucistic - Leucistic axolotls appear with a light pink body and a darker pink border.
- Wild - Wild axolotls appear with a brown body and a darker brown border.
- Cyan – Cyan axolotls appear with a light blue body and a pink border.
- Gold - Golden axolotls appear with a bright yellow body and a dark golden border.

Rare
A rare Axolotl color variation can be very difficult to find as it only has a .8% spawn rate. Finding one in the wild can take time, but breeding can speed up the process. Spawning rate remains at 0,8% during breeding, but can be done multiple times by feeding Axolotl what it likes to eat.
Previous or unreleased
Three color variations for Axolotls have been observed, but are not available in-game. These color variations were shown around the Cliffs and Caves update reveal, but have been changed or not released.
- Pink - The original color variation for the Leucistic Axolotl appeared as a very light coral pink with a dark pink border. The design was later replaced with updated Leucistic colors.
- Light Brown – The wild axolotl first appeared as a much lighter brown body, but was later replaced by the current colors of the wild axolotl.
- Green – The Green Axolotl was briefly shown during a recap of the Cliffs and Caves update reveal, but is not available in-game. It is possible that the green variation will be added during Cliffs and Caves part 2 update.
Collecting all five Axolotl color variations is a challenge, but finding a rare Axolotl can be one of the most exciting times, given its rarity in Minecraft. Although Axolotls technically cannot be tamed, they can be driven or picked up with a bucket.
Axolotls can make great companions in Minecraft and have some very cool abilities. Axolotls will attack all aquatic creatures except dolphins and turtles, and can play dead during combat for a regeneration status effect.
