Maps can be a pretty important aspect of Minecraft if you're looking to get a good idea of what's going on in your world. To expand on what you can do with these, you can use the mapping table to expand, clone, and lock them. We are going to look at how to create a mapping table in Minecraft survival 1.14, 1.15 and 1.16 in this step by step guide.
Mapping boards can be created in all versions of the game, be it PE, PS4, PC, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox or any other platform.
How to create a cartography table
Time required: 10 minutes.
To make a cartography table in Minecraft we will just need to find two pieces of paper and four of any wooden board!
You're probably far enough along in the game to have an ax at this point, so go ahead and cut down some trees to gather some wood!
Once you have the logs, craft them into planks of wood by placing them in your inventory crafting area or a crafting table.
The paper can be a little tricky because we're going to need some candy cane. It spawns near water, you may have to fetch it a bit. When you find some, be sure to punch it down because it will completely break and you can collect it faster. I recommend planting some near water at your base as it grows relatively quickly and you will always have some available!
Once you have candy cane, you can craft pieces of paper. Three canes will make three pieces of paper. We need two pieces of paper, which means we only need three! You can also find Paper in Chests, which can be found in Shipwrecks, Strongholds, and Villages. This is obviously not going to be a steady supply, so it's always best to create an area for planting sugarcane!
Now that we have the wooden planks and paper we need, we can now put them together to create our mapping table! Place two boards in the middle and two boards at the bottom stacked on top of each other. Place the two pieces of paper up above them to make the table!
Now that you have your cartography table, you can do some interesting things with it. You can add a map and a piece of paper to enlarge the size of the map and erase it. You can clone a map by adding a blank map into another map, and you can also prevent the map from updating by placing the map with a glass shutter.
If you're playing on the Bedrock Edition, you can also add a compass to your map to act as a locator. This will show you and other players on the map. Would be great for a wall of maps to see where everyone is at in your world!
