If you're looking for a fairly easy way to get food early, you'll want to get a fishing rod! These are great for getting a sustainable food source, as well as occasionally getting lucky and catching interesting items in the water. We are going to see how to make a fishing rod in Minecraft in this step by step guide.
How to make a fishing rod
Time required: 15 minutes.
To make a fishing rod in Minecraft, we will only need three sticks and two pieces of string! Sticks aren't hard to come by, but string can be a little elusive at times. Don't worry, we'll walk you through the process below.
If you've already got yourself an axe, you can chop down trees and skip some of these steps. However, if you are just starting out, it's time to strike! Find just about any tree nearby and collect a few logs from it by punching or chopping them.
Open your inventory and place the wood logs in the crafting area. Each log will create four planks, and we'll need seven in total if you don't have a crafting table yet.
Take four of your planks and fill the crafting space in your inventory. This will give us a crafting table!
We will now move on to two sticks. Place two wooden planks in your crafting table or crafting area in your inventory. Stack the planks on top of each other to get four sticks!
The chain can be quite easy to find, but you'll usually have to engage in a bit of a fight to get it! I've detailed some of the ways to get it below.
If you are near a deserted mine, it is possible to find a whole lot there. Mines usually contain a few cobwebs, and these can be harvested by hitting them with a sword! If you have a badlands/savannah biome nearby, you can almost always find at least one mine in the area! You'll have to be careful though, cave spiders have spawners in caves, so be on the lookout for those!
The most traditional way to find string is to hit spiders and drop them as loot. Wait for nightfall and search around them. Their bright red eyes are usually quite conspicuous. Make sure you have a sword with you, and beat them multiple times with it and hope for some string!
We should now have all the necessary ingredients, so let's gather them in our crafting table. Place the three sticks diagonally in the 3×3 grid. Then place two pieces of string on the far right in the two empty squares to make the fishing rod!
To catch fish, you just need to equip your brand new fishing rod and cast the line in any body of water. Wait for the bobber to go underwater, then wind it up with the same button you threw!
