Axolotl is the first amphibian mob implemented in the Minecraft 1.17 Caves and Cliffs update. This monster can be very useful, as it can fearlessly attack other underwater monsters, allowing you to freely explore underwater structures such as ocean monuments and ocean ruins.
Our guide will provide you tips on how to tame and breed axolotls in Minecraft 1.17: Caves and Cliffs update. The process itself is quite simple, but requires some preparations before you can grow them effectively.
How to tame axolotls in Minecraft 1.17
Axolotl Taming Step 1: Create a water park
First, you need to dedicate a space for keeping axolotls in your home, either inside your house or outside. It can be something as simple as a 4x4 or larger pool of water.
It is advisable to create a larger pond or dedicate an entire small lake to their breeding. The more axolotls you have, the better.
Axolotl Taming Step 2: Get a bucket of axolotls
Take a bucket of water from your village fisherman's chest and visit a local cave.
Use torches to make your way through the darkness until you come across a cave pond, which will surely contain at least an axolotl or two.
Use the water bucket on the axolotls to create a mob bucket. You will need at least two axolotls for breeding.
Take them back to your village and let them out into the pool of water.
Axolotl Taming Stage 3: Obtain a bucket of tropical fish
Axolotls will only reproduce if they eat tropical fish. You can get the fish in two ways:
- You can catch them in your water bucket in the ocean biome
- You can buy a bucket of tropical fish from wandering traders for 5 emeralds
Whichever way you chose to get the bucket of tropical fish, bring it to the pool with your axolotls and let them eat the fish.
Axolotl Taming Step 4: Raise and Tame Axolotl
When the axolotls have finished eating the fish, they will begin to breed and a baby axolotl will appear with the color of one of their parents. One of the 1 cases will be a rare blue axolotl.
The baby axolotl will become an adult in about 20 minutes, and you can repeat the breeding process every five minutes.
When you have at least a dozen axolotls, you can craft a shulker box using the following recipe:
- 2x Shulker Shell
- 1x empty chest
Then you can put all your axolotls in the shulker box and go to the nearest ocean monument. Free your axolotls and watch them destroy all the guardians there!
