Crying Obsidian is a new block type that was added in the Minecraft 1.16 Nether update. This new material looks like normal obsidian, but it's a slightly lighter purple color.
Crying Obsidian is primarily used as a crafting material for respawn anchors, which allow you to set respawn points in the updated bottom. Below we show you how to find Crying Obsidian, as well as how to use it.
Minecraft: How to Get and Use Crying Obsidian
How to Get Crying Obsidian in Minecraft
Ruined portals
The only natural source of Crying Obsidian in Minecraft 1.16 is Ruined Portals, which spawn both in-world and netherworld. Usually Ruined Portals are often a mix of Weeping Obsidian and regular Obsidian Blocks.
A portal will not activate if at least one of the blocks is Weeping Obsidian. You will need to break it down using a diamond or a netherite pickaxe.
bastion remains
Another way to get Crying Obsidian is to find it in a treasure chest in Bastion Remnant Structures, which can be found in the bottom.
Crying Obsidian Blocks spawn completely randomly inside chests, so you just need to be lucky enough to find one using this method.
piglins
Finally, you can trade gold bars with piglins, new Void monsters. There is a 10% chance that a Piglin will give you Weeping Obsidian in exchange for Gold Bars. But if you're lucky, you can get 3 crying obsidian blocks for a single gold bar.
How to Use Crying Obsidian
Crying Obsidian is primarily used to craft respawn anchors. You can read all about respawn anchors here.
But weeping obsidian is also an excellent building element because it is very durable. It cannot be pushed by pistons, and older dragons cannot destroy it.
