Now that the Minecraft 1.16 update has had time to settle, it looks like players are starting to wonder what's on the horizon in patch 1.17! Big changes in things like caves to mountains and all kinds of ideas are thrown around as ideas. However, nothing is concrete yet, and officially there has been no idea where Mojang will decide to focus on next. That doesn't mean we can't speculate! So we'll walk you through what's currently known about the next Minecraft update and when you can expect additional information.
Minecraft 1.17 release date
Minecraft 1.17 release date is unknown at this time. It will probably be in 2021 at some point, maybe even in the middle of the year. These larger patch updates take a while to complete and add to the game. We should hopefully have some idea of what kind of schedule we're looking at for the Minecraft live event on October 3. 2020.
When do we get official word on the update?
It looks like we're going to get more details on what's to come in Minecraft at the Minecraft/Minecon live event this year. The event will take place on October 3, 2020, so we'll have to wait until then to find out exactly what Mojang has planned for the game's upcoming content updates.
I've seen a lot of questions about whether there will be a Minecraft Live / Minecon event this year - and I'm very happy to say there will indeed be a stream! And we will definitely show some exciting new things then ;). More information will be coming next month – so stay tuned for that!

What will be in Minecraft 1.17?
There is a lot of speculation about Minecraft update 1.17, but unfortunately there is no concrete information about anything. There were no credible leaks, and everyone working on the game kept their mouths shut about it. October is on the way, as of this writing, so we can expect some details soon. Here are some of the suggestions players have made.
Cave Update
Much of the speculation for this patch seems to stem from a cave update. This has not been confirmed and there is no information confirming the fact that this will be what Mojang will be working on next. Many players consider caves to be a fairly boring area that could easily be improved. You can change the way they form, make them much more mysterious and fun to explore, and even add new ores and creatures to them. If you've played Minecraft in the past, you'll know that you spend quite a bit of time in the depths in search of Diamond and other valuable resources. Making these areas more scenic and rewarding for adventure would be a welcome addition to the game.
Mountain Update
Another commonly talked about addition to Minecraft would be changing the mountains. Although there are mountainous biomes, they tend to be quite boring and simple when you take the time to climb them. Players may want to feel more rewarded when taking on the task of climbing a giant mountain. You can add birds, nests, animals and more to the area. Maybe even some mountain trolls could be fun?
The final update
The Nether has new biomes, mobs, and new resources that now leave The End feeling a bit bland. It's a tough place to get to, but after taking down the Ender Dragon, there could be a lot more to do here. There could be additional biomes and additions quite similar to what The Nether got. You'd pretty much be looking to add more reasons to explore The End than there are now.
While all of these suggestions are just speculation, we shouldn't have to wait too long to see what we'll get in the next major Minecraft update. The sky is the limit when it comes to this game, so hopefully Mojang pulls all the shutdown and brings some awesome new content in the next update!
