Ubisoft has a VR gaming tie to the docu-drama Notre Dame on Fire
Notre-Dame on Fire is a virtual reality escape game from Ubisoft. The team behind the game teamed up with director Jean-Jacques Annaud to bring this story to the gaming world. The story will focus on having to escape the cathedral as it is engulfed in flames in 2019.
A docu-fiction of the same title will be released in March 2022. That said, Notre-Dame en feu will be launched alongside the film. Unfortunately, for the moment, we still do not know on which VR platforms the adventure will be available.
The Notre-Dame en feu team sought the help of engineers for the reconstruction. Ubisoft used detailed 3D models that were used in Assassin's Creed: Unity in 2014. With these models, the developers were able to deliver an hour-long virtual reality experience that places players directly inside the cathedral by fire.
It was Annaud who approached Ubisoft at the beginning of last year for this project. He wanted to have a video game connection with his next film. Considering the documentary is going to be released in March, that doesn't leave enough time for the studio to develop a full-fledged game. However, it's basically enough for a small escape room-style VR project.
"Like any escape game, it's about puzzles and cooperation with your teammates," said Ubisoft senior vice president Deborah Papiernik. "The idea is to fight your way through the cathedral to find relics and fight the fire because you have to save Notre-Dame before the time runs out."
The whole world was appalled when multiple news sources reported that the medieval cathedral had caught fire. The flames destroyed much of the 850-year-old church. Many people and organizations have mobilized around the effort to rebuild the Parisian monument.
